Comments : Do the colors in this modern painting remind you of Michelangelo's colors? They should, and Florida artist HN Pollard uses them to great effect. His subject is Mary the Magdalene, arriving at the tomb with two other women to discover that the stone has been rolled away. The artist has crafted a composition that maximizes his figures in movement, startled, blown back. They almost appear braced for what will come next. Unguent jars are flying as the woman in the rear reaches out to grab the woman closest to the tomb entrance - maybe she is trying to pull her back, protect her, warn her. Do you know which of these women is The Magdalene? To my mind, she is the woman in the red dress, symbol of a prostitute, hands grasping her jar of oil as if in prayer. -Mel Ahlborn |
